FAQ

Isn’t releasing our anger dangerous? Won’t it open up Pandora’s box?

Anger is an emotion. When you suppress emotions, your body releases a chemical into your bloodstream which blocks the cell receptors. When cell receptors are blocked, they cannot communicate effectively with each other and toxins can build up. When toxins build up, then you can start feeling aches/pains in those areas of your body as well as your body not working as well as it could. Anger being suppressed leads to chaos within the body – it’s very damaging. Releasing anger in a safe and contained way with careful guidance from a trained professional is very cathartic and healthy for you.

Shouldn’t I rather keep calm and carry on?

No. There is no surprise that since keeping calm and carrying on that stress-related diseases have reached epidemic proportions in our modern society. It’s time for something different…

Why is suppressing emotions such a bad thing?

When you suppress emotions, your body releases a chemical into your bloodstream which blocks the cell receptors. When cell receptors are blocked, they cannot communicate effectively with each other and toxins can build up. When toxins build up, then you can start feeling aches/pains in those areas of your body as well as your body not working as well as it could. When that happens, the toxins can lead to diseases, premature ageing or weight gain. A healthy diet, good exercise and healthy expression are critical for general wellbeing and health. It’s been scientifically proven in pharmacology studies that emotions are chemicals – and once released, they can flow freely again within the body. Traditional anger management says we should rationalise our anger – why are you advocating catharsis release?

It’s been scientifically proven in pharmacology studies that emotions are chemicals – and once released, they can flow freely again within the body. It is key to understand that if you run around releasing your emotions at anyone and everything around you, then that is certainly not helpful. From an anger management perspective, we don’t want you releasing any of your anger at other people or imploding in on yourself. The idea behind catharsis therapy is that you release the emotions in a safe environment (which is very cathartic and releasing) and then we discuss the sources of your anger in a calm and peaceful way. This is an excellent approach.

I have never unleashed my anger before – what will happen?

You will get really angry
It will feel red hot and like an explosion
When you release this explosive energy, it will fall out of you like a black vomit
It’s better to keep going until you are done
Underneath anger is usually sadness or fear or isolation/despair, so prepare yourself that when you have released anger fully, you might feel like having a good cry. This is very cathartic and good for you to have a good cry.
You want to keep going till you feel ‘NOTHING’ which is a void of any emotion.
This is when you sit quietly and drink water to replenish the lost fluids

If done within a class, this is a very cathartic and healing experience. Participants usually report feeling like a weight has been lifted and ‘much better’.

If I release my emotions, won’t I just get swallowed up by them?

Everyone thinks that but this never happens. It’s been scientifically proven in pharmacology studies that emotions are chemicals – and once released, they can flow freely again within the body. No emotion when TRULY experienced, lasts for longer than 30 minutes. I am not sure I am fit enough to do this class, what to do?

You take the class at your own pace. Like any new fitness discipline, you start slowly and work your way up. The instructors will guide you carefully to not overdo it at the start. It’s like a mixture of Zumba and Crossfit so take it slowly until you become fitter.

Will releasing my emotions make me into a drama king or queen?

Well yes and no. If you run around releasing your emotions at anyone and everything around you, then that is certainly not helpful. From an anger management perspective, we don’t want you releasing any of your anger at other people or imploding in on yourself. Why do I pick up weight or age faster by suppressing my emotions?
